VPS and Linux backups that recover the application
Coordinate database exports, persistent files, rebuild instructions, and independent storage for a meaningful server recovery drill.
Read the 6-minute guidePreserve records and the contract.
An API-based export needs a completeness definition. Identify the records, attachments, relationships, and schema required to reconstruct useful information. A successful response is one page or operation unless the service says otherwise. Keep capture logic and recovery logic separate, especially when replaying requests could cause real actions.
Design against the provider’s documented export and import behavior. Handle pagination, rate limits, retries, and relationships deliberately. Mark incomplete captures clearly. Keep secret values out of ordinary logs and store the configuration schema separately from working credentials.
Compare expected records and inspect representative relationships in a sandbox. Test a retry without duplicating data, and verify that restored records can be read by the application. Disable actions that send messages, create charges, or modify production systems.
Only use a documented, controlled restoration method. A replay can duplicate actions or overwrite newer state. Identify idempotency behavior, test in isolation, and reconcile external records before any live recovery.
