Android and iOS: back up before changing phones
Check photos, contacts, application data, and sign-in access before you erase or trade in the device that still holds your originals.

Before replacing an iPhone or iPad, distinguish device backup coverage from synchronized cloud information and application-specific transfers. Apple documents both iCloud and computer backup methods, with different exclusions. Keep a checklist for the information and sign-in access you need on the replacement device.
Review the supported method for your device and inspect its exclusions. Apple notes that computer backup encryption is optional and off by default; check the setting and preserve its password through a protected route. Handle synchronized content and app-specific exports as separate inventory items.
On the replacement device, test important accounts and open representative recent and older content. Check a complex contact and a real application project. Do not retire the original merely because familiar app icons have appeared.
Complete the acceptance checklist first and confirm a usable recovery copy remains. Keep the old device protected while checking the new one, then follow the platform’s supported removal and erase procedure.
