Back up Gmail and contacts with usable exports
Save a mail archive you can read: preserve export context, check attachments, test contacts, and separate access from the original account.
Read the 6-minute guideExport, inspect, then trust the copy.
Google Takeout offers a supported route for downloading selected Google data. For Gmail, plan beyond the download: keep every archive part, identify the mail format, and choose a reader that can open it. A mailbox export is a capture to inspect, not a live replacement for the account.
Request the authorized export, download the complete result, and save a manifest beside it. Work with a duplicate when testing import into another application. Google notes that changes between the export request and archive creation may not be included, so keep capture boundaries visible.
Open representative mail from different periods and check attachments. Inspect how the chosen reader handles Gmail label information. Verify access to the saved archive from a device that does not depend on an active session in the original account.
Choose a protected destination you can reach without relying exclusively on the Gmail account you are preserving. Keep its encryption access separately and test that route before changing or closing the original account.
