Back up Gmail and contacts with usable exports
Save a mail archive you can read: preserve export context, check attachments, test contacts, and separate access from the original account.
Read the 6-minute guideKeep messages readable after the mailbox.
An email recovery plan begins with a reading goal: find a message, open its attachment, or move correspondence into another supported application. Save the archive’s context as carefully as the messages. Account ownership, export scope, and the intended reader determine whether the copy will remain useful.
Use a supported export for your mailbox and preserve all package parts. Keep an untouched original, then import a working copy into a controlled local profile. Follow organizational retention and access rules for work or school mail rather than assuming a personal export is permitted.
Read recent and older messages, inspect several attachments, and search for a known conversation. Test offline access when that is the goal. Record which linked cloud documents remain outside the archive and require separate authorized preservation.
Not necessarily. Distinguish attached files from links to remote content. Identify which linked documents you may preserve, obtain them through a supported route, and record their relationship to the mail archive.
