S3 backups: versioning, retention, and restore tests
Design a version-aware object-storage workflow with a recovery manifest, deliberate cleanup rules, and tested retrieval permissions.
Read the 6-minute guideGive object versions a restore path.
Amazon S3 can hold backup objects and their historical versions, but the application still needs a capture and restoration procedure. Define what each object represents and which objects belong to the same recovery point. Keep a manifest so another operator can select the right set without guessing.
Check versioning deliberately; Amazon documents that it is disabled by default. Design the capture process to distinguish incomplete uploads from accepted recovery sets. Review lifecycle rules and the backup application’s cleanup behavior together so they preserve the history you need.
Use disposable objects to test overwrite and older-version retrieval. Then restore an actual application archive into isolation. Verify its contents and measure access, transfer, decryption, import, and review rather than only the download.
Amazon describes S3 object versions as complete objects, not differences. Estimate retained storage from the real archive size and change pattern, and review the applicable storage and retrieval charges before scaling a workflow.
